About me

Meet Josephine.

Some stories are born where cultures cross, in uprootedness, in the bonds that make us and in the questions about identity that stay with us throughout our lives. The cinema of Josephine Landertinger Forero is born precisely there: in that intimate territory where the personal meets the political, and where individual experiences reveal collective realities.

Born to a Colombian mother and an Austrian father, Josephine grew up between Lesotho, South Africa and Portugal before studying film in Berlin. A life between continents has shaped a specific and sensitive way of seeing. Identity, migration, motherhood, family bonds and gender roles run through her work, in which she explores the contradictions of human experience from an intimate, poetic and feminine perspective.

A graduate in Film Studies and Social Communication from the Freie Universität Berlin, with a diploma in Directing Actors from Congo Films School in Bogotá, Josephine has built a body of work that moves between documentary and fiction, combining the exploration of personal worlds with a critical look at the social structures that shape them. Her films have been released commercially in cinemas, travelled to international festivals and reached audiences in many countries through platforms such as Amazon Prime, Filmin and Retina Latina.

In 2016 she presented her first feature, Home – el país de la ilusión, a documentary that reconstructs her mother's migration between Colombia and Portugal. Through one family's story, the film takes on universal questions of belonging, memory and the search for a place to call home. It received the IDARTES Cinemateca Bogotá National Award and was nominated for Best Documentary by the Colombian Film Academy in 2017.

Her interest in identities and experiences that are often left out of dominant narratives continued with Girls & Sex (2018), a documentary series for television in which she directed the Colombian episode, devoted to breaking the taboo around menstruation. That same year she made El Primer Baile, a short fiction film about inclusion that received an Honourable Jury Mention at WeCam Fest 2020.

In 2023 she released Soy Cris de Tierra Bomba, a documentary led by a young Afro-Colombian man from the LGBTIQ+ community. With a sensitive approach to identity and representation, the film had its national premiere at FICCI 62 and screened at the Philadelphia Latino Film Festival. Its visual approach, which uses motion graphics to recreate the protagonist's digital world, earned a nomination for Best Visual Effects 2023 from the Colombian Film Academy.

Josephine is currently finishing Ellas, Yo, Nosotras, a feature documentary about the social expectations placed on women and the tension between one's own identity and the roles society assigns. In parallel she is writing Quince, a fiction drama with elements of suspense set in the Pyrenees, which explores normalised machismo and the complex relationship between a mother and her teenage daughter. Between July and December 2025 the project took part in the CIDAP Efímero Films residencies, funded by the Euro-Mediterranean Region and the Spanish Ministry of Culture.

Alongside her work as a director and screenwriter, Josephine curates for film festivals and trains new generations of filmmakers. She is the founder of Just Love Film Academy, where she shares her experience and accompanies others as they develop their own cinematic voices, work she also carries out at universities and educational institutions.

Whether through fiction or documentary, her cinema seeks to open space for other voices, to question what we have learned to see as normal and to come close to the most complex areas of human experience. These are films that cross geographical, cultural and emotional borders; stories that, from the intimate, question the collective and find in vulnerability a form of resistance.

I reflect and write about equity and diversity in film on my blog, in Spanish.
